Further Evidence for Temporal Decay in Working Memory
نویسندگان
چکیده
The sources of forgetting in working memory are a matter of intense debate: is there a time-related decay of memory traces or is forgetting uniquely due to representation-based interference? In a previous study, we claimed to have provided evidence supporting the temporal decay hypothesis (Portrat, Barrouillet, & Camos, 2008). However, reanalyzing our data, Lewandowsky and Oberauer (2009) demonstrated that they do not provide compelling evidence for temporal decay, and suggested a class of alternative models favoring a representation-based interference account. In this article, we develop from the most recent proposals made by these authors two of the most plausible extensions of these alternative models. We show that none of these extensions can account for recent findings related to between-domain working memory performance, and that both lead to predictions that are contradicted by new empirical evidence. Finally, we show that recent studies that have been claimed to rule out the temporal decay hypothesis do not resist close scrutiny. We conclude that the TBRS model remains the most parsimonious way to account for forgetting and restoration of memory traces in working memory. ha l-0 07 98 38 1, v er si on 1 8 M ar 2 01 3

Further evidence for temporal decay in working memory: reply to Lewandowsky and Oberauer (2009).
The sources of forgetting in working memory (WM) are a matter of intense debate: Is there a time-related decay of memory traces, or is forgetting uniquely due to representation-based interference? In a previous study, we claimed to have provided evidence supporting the temporal decay hypothesis (S. Portrat, P. Barrouillet, & V. Camos, 2008). However, reanalyzing our data, S. What drives forgetting in working memory? Recent evidence suggests that in a complex-span task in which an irrelevant processing task alternates with presentation of the memoranda, recall declines when the time taken to complete the processing task is extended while holding the time for rehearsal in between processing steps constant (Portrat, Barrouillet, & Camos, 2008). This time-based forgett...

Background and Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the non-computerized training package of working memory (WM) and selective attention with captain’s Log software on the components of WM. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted in a quasi-experimental design, with non- random targeted sampling, and pre-test, post-test, follow-up, and control...
متن کاملDecay or Interference in Working Memory 1 Time - Related Decay or Interference - Based Forgetting in Working Memory ?
176 words) The Time-Based Resource-Sharing model of working memory assumes that memory traces suffer from a time-related decay when attention is occupied by concurrent activities. Using complex continuous span tasks in which temporal parameters are carefully controlled, Barrouillet et al. (2007) recently provided evidence that any increase in time of the processing component of these tasks resu...

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder cause significant problems in academic performance, cognitive, social, emotional, developmental issues for many students and then in adulthood for their occupational and familial function. In the absence of treatment, the children are prone to develop psychological and social injuries in adulthood. On the other hand, there is a wealth of evid...
